DIY: Refreshing Detangling Hair Spray

If you’re like me, you hate using dry shampoo. I’ve tried so many types, hate them all; plus with having dark hair, it ends up looking powdery no matter how much I rub it in! But I can’t wash my hair everyday. It dries out way too quick, plus it’s not good to wash it every day anyways. And as someone who HAS to dye their hair (ahem greys) on a monthly basis, I really need to keep it as healthy as I can.

So I’m going to tell you all about my secret (okay not really a secret) refreshing hair detangling spray!

I wouldn’t really consider it as a replacement for what dry shampoo does, but it definitely gets rid of that “I haven’t washed my hair today” smell, and gets it ready for the days styling. And it’s totally customizable.

Things you need:

---Spray bottle
---*Distilled water or boiled and cooled down water (3/4 to 1 cup- or to fill bottle)
---Vegetable Glycerin (1 TBSP)
---**Carrier Oil; your choice Grapeseed, Argon, Jojoba or your favourite oil (1/2 tsp)
---Vitamin E (1 capsule or ½ tsp)
---***Essential Oils 10-20 drops total

*Using distilled water, or boiling water and letting it cool down, will increase the shelf life and lessen the chance of any bacteria growing. It won’t keep forever though, try to use within 1-3 months.

**Depending on your hair type, you might want to increase or decrease the amount of oil you use. I have very fine hair, so I have to use a smaller amount. If you want to use this just as a post-wash conditioning spray, you could increase the amount of oil you use by 1-2 tsps.

***When choosing essential oils, I pick them to match my shampoo, currently I’m using a grapefruit mint shampoo, so I went with a mix of Grapefruit and Peppermint Essential Oils. For my mix I used about 15 drops of grapefruit and 5 drops of peppermint, since peppermint is a very strong scent in comparison. But you can play around with your blend until you get it the way you like! If using for kids, decrease the amount of essential oils and use kid safe essential oils; Lavender is usually an okay essential oil for kids!

Some other great essential oil combinations are:
Rosemary and Peppermint
Tea Tree and Lemongrass
Lavender and Chamomile
Sweet Orange and Clove
Jasmine and Ylang Ylang

The possibilities are endless! (Avoid photo toxic essential oils like lemon, lime, ginger, or bergamot).

Directions:

Pour water into spray bottle. Add vegetable glycerin, carrier oil, vitamin E, and essential oils. (If you’re playing around with the scent, add the essential oils drop by drop into the glycerin and oil until you get your desired scent, and then add it to the water.)

Shake the bottle and spray into your hair! It’ll also help with detangling post wash.

There you have it! A great way to freshen up your hair or detangle with all natural ingredients that you might already have in your cupboard!

Happy Hair Spraying!
