We spent the month of September watching what we ate, getting our beauty sleep, and making sure we get our daily exercise. We hope you followed along and you find yourself feeling a little healthier, too! It's amazing the difference that small lifestyle changes can make to your health.
Now that September is coming to a close, we're taking a moment to reflect on our experience, and then we're moving on. Keep your eyes open for our next blog post series, coming up in October.
Take care of yourselves!
Self-Care September is almost over and we've watched what we ate and caught up on our beauty sleep. Another thing that suffers when we're tired, stressed, or busy is exercise. That's why this week we're reminding ourselves to walk it off.
Getting more exercise can feel daunting. We can't all make it to the gym everyday or run a marathon, so sometimes it's easy to stop before you even get started. Did you know, though, that just walking every day (or even most days) can have some great health benefits?
Walking for just 2.5 hours each week, or 21 minutes a day, lowers your risk of heart disease by 30%. It can also reduce your risk of diabetes and cancer, help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol, and keeps you mentally sharp. On top of that, studies have shown that every one minute of brisk walking women do during the day decreases their risk of obesity by 5%. With all these health benefits, you can't afford not to start exercising.
This week, we're taking it one step at a time and making sure we walk at least an hour a day. How will you get your steps in?
For this week of Self-Care September, we're catching up on our beauty sleep.
One third of Canadians are considered sleep-deprived, meaning that odds are, you're not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. Sleep deprivation can be pretty serious, impacting your mood, your ability to pay attention, and even your waistline. It also wreaks havoc on your skin, leaving you looking older than you are.
If you're not getting enough sleep, it doesn't matter if you're taking care of yourself in other ways. Your health will still end up suffering.
What do you do if you're not getting a good night's sleep? Try exercising more, turning off screens before bed (the blue light from your phone or tablet can keep you awake), and developing a calming bedtime routine. We like a relaxing lavender bath before bed to help us settle down to sleep. Try our Sweet Dreams bath salts or bath bombs to take your bedtime routine to another level of relaxation.
Join us this week as we focus on our sleep hygiene and make up for all those long nights.
For our first week of Self-Care September, we're focusing on eating our vegetables. Our moms were right, it's important to make sure we're eating lots of different kinds of vegetables. The nutrients found in fruits and vegetables help to support our body to repair and replenish our skin and hair. After a sun-soaked August, our skin can use some replenishment!
We found some fruits and vegetables that help support healthy skin:
We're trying this recipe from foodiful.com that contains all three! As an added bonus, it's got the popular healthy grain quinoa in it and extra virgin olive oil.
Try it with us this week and let us know what healthy recipes you have to help you eat your veggies!
There's always so much to do, it's easy to forget to take care of yourself. September always feels like a time of new beginnings to us, so we thought why not spend the month re-focusing on ourselves. While using great products helps, we need to ensure that we're taking care of our bodies to take care of our skin. Beauty grows from the inside.
Want to join in on our journey? Follow along with us every Friday in September to see what we're focusing on each week!
See you Friday :)
