Wow! It's the end of September already? We had a busy summer, so our Loving Local segment took a bit of a pause while we both moved and did other summery things!
But we were lucky enough to meet up with the lovely Melanie of Decor By Nature, a wonderful decor artisan of beautiful Victoria BC. We sat down for a chat at Starbucks in Langford on a beautiful summer evening in August to find out more about Melanie and her amazing hand made products.
Melanie is from Victoria; however before settling down and having a family in Westshore, she spent some time off the island, and the country, to explore. She spent some time going to school in Kamloops, lived in Ireland and Australia, and traveled around Europe and Asia.
Returning to Victoria, and starting her family, prompted her to start making her own west coast adventure inspired decorations when she was trying to find items to fill her first sons nursery with. She really wanted to capture her own sense of adventure and pass along her love for the great outdoors to her kids, so her home based side business "Decor by Nature" began to evolve.
Her hand made wooden signs began to take shape, learning calligraphy, and working on different art pieces, friends and family began to notice asking for pieces to be made. She had lots of time to develop products while on several stints of maternity leave (she has three beautiful boys now!)
In 2014 she decided to try her hand at selling at some markets, although it wasn't until this year (2017) that she really began to actively persue selling her signs. She's had some trial and error with markets, but had a very positive outlook and just started saying yes to everything that came her way! This year she took part in the Sidney Night Market, in the past she's been a part of The Owl Designer and the Little Kids Owl fairs in the fall and winter, and you may just find her there this year as well. She also took part in a collaborated pop up market put on by Modern Baby in the spring.
And this year her items have been out on store shelves, including Momease Baby Boutique on
Hillside in Victoria, Thistle & Wren in Fernwood, and R-Cubed in Parksville.
While her items have solely been home decor based, she dipped her toes in the wedding scene his year creating some beautiful wedding decorations, and hopes to expand into more of that in 2018.
We asked Melanie what her favourite pieces were; she loves her "Be Brave" bear sign which she graciously gave to us, her "Life Rules" sign she made with her boys in mind, and her dream catchers she began to create this year as well. We also got a few more signs from Melanie, which you can see down below!
So look out for Decor by Nature in Victoria at local shops and markets, and stock up on some amazing west coast inspired decorations for your home. And check her out online on Instagram (@decorbynaturemg) or her website (www.decorbynature.com).
Keep on loving local!
We spent the month of September watching what we ate, getting our beauty sleep, and making sure we get our daily exercise. We hope you followed along and you find yourself feeling a little healthier, too! It's amazing the difference that small lifestyle changes can make to your health.
Now that September is coming to a close, we're taking a moment to reflect on our experience, and then we're moving on. Keep your eyes open for our next blog post series, coming up in October.
Take care of yourselves!
Self-Care September is almost over and we've watched what we ate and caught up on our beauty sleep. Another thing that suffers when we're tired, stressed, or busy is exercise. That's why this week we're reminding ourselves to walk it off.
Getting more exercise can feel daunting. We can't all make it to the gym everyday or run a marathon, so sometimes it's easy to stop before you even get started. Did you know, though, that just walking every day (or even most days) can have some great health benefits?
Walking for just 2.5 hours each week, or 21 minutes a day, lowers your risk of heart disease by 30%. It can also reduce your risk of diabetes and cancer, help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol, and keeps you mentally sharp. On top of that, studies have shown that every one minute of brisk walking women do during the day decreases their risk of obesity by 5%. With all these health benefits, you can't afford not to start exercising.
This week, we're taking it one step at a time and making sure we walk at least an hour a day. How will you get your steps in?
Recently, one of us fell in love with a new brand of shampoo. Since we don't create any hair care products ourselves, we feel like we have to share when we find a brand that's made with high quality, natural ingredients and makes our hair look shiny and healthy. The fact that it's made with beer is a bonus!
Recently, I visited my hair stylist and found out that all the time I spent outside in the sun this summer wasn't kind to my hair. Suddenly, it was dry and damaged, so I started looking for something kind and natural to use instead of my usual brand.
A trip to the mall lead me to Lush and their Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo, which is as the title suggests, made with stout. While stout is delicious in a glass, could it help revive my sad hair?
It turns out, yes it can! Among other things, beer contains biotin, which is one of the most important vitamins for healthy hair growth. And the darker the better, so stout is a great choice. After just a couple of weeks of using this shampoo, I have found my hair looks healthier and shinier, and styles much more easily.
If you can stomach pouring it down the drain, try washing your hair with beer yourself and see what you think. If you can't stomach the waste, give Lush's shampoo a try. Have you tried washing your hair with beer? Let us know what you thought!
For this week of Self-Care September, we're catching up on our beauty sleep.
One third of Canadians are considered sleep-deprived, meaning that odds are, you're not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. Sleep deprivation can be pretty serious, impacting your mood, your ability to pay attention, and even your waistline. It also wreaks havoc on your skin, leaving you looking older than you are.
If you're not getting enough sleep, it doesn't matter if you're taking care of yourself in other ways. Your health will still end up suffering.
What do you do if you're not getting a good night's sleep? Try exercising more, turning off screens before bed (the blue light from your phone or tablet can keep you awake), and developing a calming bedtime routine. We like a relaxing lavender bath before bed to help us settle down to sleep. Try our Sweet Dreams bath salts or bath bombs to take your bedtime routine to another level of relaxation.
Join us this week as we focus on our sleep hygiene and make up for all those long nights.
For our first week of Self-Care September, we're focusing on eating our vegetables. Our moms were right, it's important to make sure we're eating lots of different kinds of vegetables. The nutrients found in fruits and vegetables help to support our body to repair and replenish our skin and hair. After a sun-soaked August, our skin can use some replenishment!
We found some fruits and vegetables that help support healthy skin:
We're trying this recipe from foodiful.com that contains all three! As an added bonus, it's got the popular healthy grain quinoa in it and extra virgin olive oil.
Try it with us this week and let us know what healthy recipes you have to help you eat your veggies!
There's always so much to do, it's easy to forget to take care of yourself. September always feels like a time of new beginnings to us, so we thought why not spend the month re-focusing on ourselves. While using great products helps, we need to ensure that we're taking care of our bodies to take care of our skin. Beauty grows from the inside.
Want to join in on our journey? Follow along with us every Friday in September to see what we're focusing on each week!
See you Friday :)
